The new Hadrian's Wall Path is open from this Friday, 23 May,
meaning that for the first time in 1,600 years, walkers will be able
to follow the entire 84-mile wall along an unbroken footpath - it
says here.
The trail is fully signposted and stretches from Wallsend on
Tyneside across to Bowness on Solway on the Cumbrian Coast. In the making of the path, which is part of a £6m investment by the Countryside Agency, some 30 miles of new rights of way have been created. Check out our earlier articles, linked below, for more information.
It's hoped that the new national trail will generate income for
the area, and Countryside Agency chief, Richard Wakeford, estimates that by 2006 some 20,000 people a year will walk the entire
trail, along with day visitors walking sections. These visitors are expected to spend £7m annually and support 80 new jobs.
So, if you want to get on the trail before the masses, head over there this bank holiday weekend. The OS is releasing new editions of the
Explorer maps with the route marked and you can obtain leaflets, maps
and an officical guide (£12.99) from the Hadrian's Wall
Information Line on 01434 322002.
Alternatively, see the new Hadrian's Wall Path official
web site for loads of info, pics and transport details.
