Hairy Harvesters Hit North Yorks Heather...

Some 60 Highland Cattle are being introduced to North Yorkshire in an effort to preserve heather moorlands without the use of chemical weedkillers. Mind those pointy bits...

North Yorkshire's heather moorlands are about to be alive with the sound of munching highland cattle.

Some 60 of the shaggy, big-horned mac-beasties have been drafted in to an area between the Vale of York and the Whitby coast as an experiment aimed at saving delicate young heather shoots which are otherwise at risk of being beaten up by bullying grass and bracken.

The cattle - presumably - eat the grass and leave the heather untouched and are an alternative to using 'slash-and-burn' clearance techniques or chemical weedkillers to preserve the dramatic purple heather.

The scheme is being introduced by a local farmer in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. You can read all about it in today's Guardian here, alternatively you can find the original release on the Government News Site.

Any thoughts Simon C?

Erm, not many about the coos. And mostly not really suitable for a public forum.

Except they look nicer than the skanky sheep you see all over the place.

But they could go mad and start eating people or their kit?

Oh, and it seems to me that every time mankind decides to introduce animals to an area in an attempt to "help" with another problem, it goes horribly Pete Tong. Next thing you know the cows will be taking over the world!!!

I'm all in favour of nasty chemical weedkillers to be honest. What harm can they possibly do?

PS John, dear boy, why DID you ask for my thoughts on this? They're (as usual) pretty much nonsense.....
