North Yorkshire spa town Harrogate
is set to get an exciting
new indoor wall early next year with the team behind the
popular Manchester Climbing Centre converting a disused fabric factory
into a state of the art climbing facility.
 Harrogate Climbing Centre will
be opening its doors in January 2010, bringing an exciting major
addition to the Yorkshire climbing scene. The centre is being developed
by Yorkshireman John Dunne, the man behind Manchester Climbing Centre -
right, under construction - and many modern grit classics including New
Statesman at Ilkley and Widdop Wall at Widdop.
Harrogate Climbing Centre is set to boast over 65 climbing lines, as
well as a dedicated bouldering area, abseil station and auto belays.
Local restauranteurs Brio are providing an on-site café so
there’s opportunity for a brew and a sandwich should you get rained off
at Almscliff or Brimham!
In addition, acclaimed specialist outdoors kit specialist Outside will
be running a retail shop on site to service all your equipment and
clothing needs.

Crimplene...
Work has already begun on converting the ex-ICI factory that has
previously been known as the birthplace of Crimplene, into a vibrant,
modern climbing centre. MCC chief route setter Andy Jack and British
Bouldering Team member and regular route setter Dave Barrans
will be leading a team to provide the same top-quality routes as can be
found at Manchester, with routes set for all grades, form the complete
beginner to the regular hardcore climber.
On the development of the centre, owner John Dunne said
“We’re really excited to be bringing a premier venue to North
Yorkshire. With the skills and experience we’ve gained in the ongoing
development of Manchester Climbing Centre, we will be able to take
indoor climbing in Yorkshire to a new level. The new centre is right
next to some of the North’s best crags and the climbing scene in the
area is buzzing. We’re really keen to contribute an excellent centre
for climbers in Yorkshire and further afield.”
