Officially opened by BBC presenter Michael Buerk on Monday, the
new Herefordshire Trail is a 154-mile circular walking route
that links the county's five market towns using existing rights of
way.
The route was apparently devised by members of the Ramblers'
Association and as a part of the project, scrub has been cleared and
paths opened up with new stiles being erected and signs installed.
There's also a 100-page booklet promoting the trail and a dedicated
Herefordshire Trail web site.
In addition, sections of the trail will form part of the Herefordshire
Walking Festival which takes place between June 18-25,
with nine walks from the trail being used in the Festival.
The walk passes through varied landscape from the Malvern hills in
the east of the county through to the Black Mountains in the west and
can be walked either as a continuous loop or, of course, in
sections.
The guide book is available for £5.95 at local Tourist
Information Centres or by post, see the web site for details where
there's also excellent information on accommodation, food and drink
facilities and some basic taster walks as well as a very quiet forum
and a gallery that will give you more idea of what the landscape
offers.
