Rolling Stone Keith Richards has triumphed in a local council
battle over a footpath diversion.
Richards applied to have a footpath running through the grounds of
his country house diverted on the grounds that public access placed
him at personal risk, something that the local authority accepted,
particularly in the light of the attack on ex-Beetle George
Harrison.
The footpath reportedly passes within some 11 yards of Richards'
home near Chichester in West Sussex allowing the public unfettered
views of the ageing pop star's house and wrinkles. One councillor
reportedly argued that the diversion would deprive walkers of the
oportunity to view 'the attractive features of the house', but
ultimately a large majority voted in favour of the diversion.
It's just the latest example of celebrities seeking path
diversions for their own privacy, but will come as a particular
disappointment to ramblers generally, many of who will have grown up
with the Stones and will have been interested in viewing this ancient artifact at first hand. For more details see this
story in the Telegraph, or this
