Today's Guardian carries an interview with Everest hero Sir Edmund
Hillary, now 83 and living in Auckland in his native New Zealand.
It the sort of thing you can expect to see a lot of in the next
few months, with the 50th Anniversary of the climbing of the mountain
bearing down on us like a runaway media mountaineering
juggernaut.
Under the headline 'We knocked the bastard off', Hillary admits
that were he 33 today, he's not sure he'd even consider climbing
Everest, given how much is known about the mountain. Then concedes "I
suppose I would like to climb it." He also tells how on the summit,
he went to shake Tenzing's hand, but the Sherpa threw his arms around
him."
It's not the most profound piece we've ever read, but still worth
a browses. See
the story here.
