Berghaus and the LD Mountain Centre are celebrating their joint 40th anniversary with a one-off event featuring sponsored mountaineers Chris Bonington and Alan Hinkes in Newcastle
Chris Bonington and Alan Hinkes are combining for a
special event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Berghaus
and Newcastle-based outdoor retailer LD Mountain Centre, which
is where it all started.
The celebratory talk is taking place at Newcastle City Hall on
Monday 13 November and of course you're getting two
Berghaus-sponsored mountaineers for the price of one.
Alan Hinkes - above - is fresh from becoming the first Briton to
summit all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks, a momentous
achievement that's consumed around 18 years of his life and left him
with some amazing tales to tell.
Meanwhile, Sir Chris Bonington's story is a the centre of modern
British and world mountaineering with a raft of massive himalayan
expeditions behind him including the successful Everest SW Face trip
which put Dougal Haston and Doug Scott on the summit of the world's
highest mountain by one of the hardest routes on the peak.
The History
Berghaus needs no introduction - it's been behind innovative
products like producing the first rucksac with an internal frame,
being the first European brand to commercially use Gore-Tex
waterproof breathable fabrics, inventing the Yeti Gaiter and, more
recently, the impressive Bioflex pack system - but LD Mountain Centre
is less well known.
Founded as the first specialist outdoor store in Newcastle, LD
Mountain Centre took its name from the men behind it, Peter Lockey
and Gordon Davison. The store needed a name for its wholesale arm and
Berghaus was born. As they developed their own products, they too
were given the Berghaus name, loosely meaning "Mountain Centre" in
German, deliberately alluding to the Austrian and German origins of
many of the best products available at the time.
Sir Chris Bonington comments: "The lecture will be a rare occasion
to celebrate two well known names in the climbing and mountaineering
community - Berghaus and LD Mountain Centre. The two have been
linked since their very beginnings and telling an audience about some
of the amazing expeditions that have been possible because of them is
a fitting tribute.
"There are many fond memories over the years of being
involved with both companies as they have grown. It's incredible to
think there is already 40 years of experience there. I'm sure there
will be many more to come."
