Hinkes Announces Next Target, Sort Of...
Britain's so-called 'unluckiest living climber' is off again, here's where.

Al Hinkes, Britain's so-called 'unluckiest living climber' - and
let's face it, it's not a bad tag for publicity purposes - has
announced in a slightly round about way that his next target is
Dhaulaghiri.
Hinkes needs to notch up just three more 8000-ers to become the
first Briton to complete the 14 Himalayan biggies. Speaking at the
stand of his main sponsor Berghaus, at the current spring outdoors
trade show, Go Outdoors (charmingly abbreviated to 'GOUT' by
insiders), Hinkes began by saying that he didn't yet have a permit
for any of his three remaining summits, Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga and
Annapurna.
Apparently modern mountaineering permits are getting a bit like
cut price airline tickets and Al's waiting till the last minute so he
can find one to share. Which mountain? Ah, he bluffed, that'd be
telling before coming clean and admitting that it's likely to be the
one most likely to be confused with an exotica cocktail.
He's due off at the end of March and if you know anyone with an
Apex or Standby permit for one of Alan's remaining peaks, please let
us know and we'll pass on the details. For information on Hinkes'
precious exploits check the previous articles linked below or have a
look at the relevant section on the Berghaus
web site.
