Hinkes Lecture Tour For November-December

With 12 of the world's 14 8,000-metre plus peaks under his belt, Yorkshireman Alan Hinkes is a tantalising, erm, two summits away from being the first Briton to climb all of the biggies.

If you've followed Alan's progress on this site and elsewhere, you'll know that it's not all been plain sailing and he's had a few close shaves along the way, including the infamous chapati incident - see links below.

He's also taken a lot of photographs and video footage along the way too and from next month he'll be criss-crossing the country on a lecture tour that will focus both on Challenge 8000 and more generally on his life and climbing. If you've encountered Alan, you'll be familiar with his dry, uncompromising Yorkshire humour, so you can expect an entertaining evening.

One of the climbs highlighted will be his recent ascent of Annapurna which he climbed in record time, summiting less than a week after arriving at base camp, despite conditions that led to top American mountaineer Ed Viesturs backing off. He was the first Brit to climb the notoriously hazardous mountain - the fatality rate is apparently almost 60 per-cent - for 30 years.

The last were Dougal Haston and Don Whillans who made the first ascent fof the mountain via the south face with the Chris Bonington expedition of 1970.

Should be good. Check out the Berghaus web site for more details or call Alan's ticket line on 0191 516 5701. Alternatively you can e-mail.

I went to see Alan Hinkes talk in Exeter last night - it was brilliant!

Unfortunatly I did not have enough cash on me to buy the video...

Does anybody know where I could pick up a copy?

Might be worth an email to Berghaus.
