What does Alan Hinkes have in common with Captain Cook, Alan
Bennett and Brian Clough?
Well, apart from being a bloke, he's a Yorkshireman and, to his
intense pleasure, has been named in a list of the top 50 Yorkshire
people of all time by Sir Bernard Ingham, Mrs T's growling press
spokesman in a new book. Apparently he's also rather pleased to be
one of only five of the selection still living.

Hinkes - typical
bloody-minded Yorkshireman...
|
Yorkshire Greats, published by Dalesman, and written - obviously - by
a Yorkshireman, aims to distill the essence of Yorkshireness, a
combination, the author says of 'grit, persistence and
bloody-mindedness'. That'll be Hinkes then...
According to the Guardian, Ingham thought 'here was something
peculiarly Yorkshire about deciding to climb all the world's 14 peaks
over 8,000 metres'.
So does that make Reinhold Messner an honorary Yorkshireman?
Number 51, in case you were wondering, was Dame Judi Dench with
Hinkes coming in at 48, just one place behind Brian Clough.
Just a reminder too, that you can still catch Alan on his nationwide Full Monty Tour - see previous articles listed below.
