Top Yorkshire mountaineer Alan Hinkes won someone 20 quid the
other day we can exclusively report.

'You can afford to buy me a pint

Alan had been climbing with a mate on Helvellyn and returned to the
car to find a note on the windscreen along the lines of 'if you're
Alan Hinkes please ring this number'. Turns out that a couple of lads
spotted Alan, but one of them couldn't believe that he was the
actual, bona fide, mega-buck sponsored Project 8000-man himself.
When Hinksey phoned to confirm that he was, indeed, himself, the
less doubting of the two lads won himself an easy 20 quid. 'People
just can't believe I actually climb in the UK,' said Alan drily. In
fact he gets out as often as he can both as a professional guide, for
his own enjoyment and to keep fit for his Himalayan epics.
Of course he's now just two summits away from becoming the first
Brit to climb all 14 of the 8,000-metre plus peaks with only
Kangchenjunga and Dhaulagiri to go. His next Himalayan trip is
scheduled for this spring, but despite a serious thumbscrew session,
he wasn't saying which of the two it's going to be, mainly because -
he says - he hasn't yet decided.
Chances are that the announcement will be made at this year's OS
Outdoors Show at the NEC in March, but watch this space for more
upates. For more information on Alan, see his section of the
Berghaus
web site.
