Humar reportedly broke both legs and suffered heavy internal haemorrhaging after plummeting into the nine-foot deep hole on the construction site and, according to this story on Outside Online, had to undergo six hours of surgery. He is expected to remain in hospital for ten days and a full recovery will take months.

Humar completed the first solo ascent of the south face of Dhaulagiri last year and in 1996 put up a new route climbing solo on Ama Dablam. His achievemnent on Dhaulagiri was so highly rated that the legendary Reinhold Messner turned up to congratulate him on his return to Slovenia.

Tomaz has his own web site which is mainly concerned with his climbing exploits rather than DIY. You can buy a tee-shirt, check out the archives of his Dhaulagiri trip or send him a personal message direct at tomaz@humar.com. Probably best not to mention houses though...
