If you're unconvinced by the concept of long distance walks then
what you need is an incentive and what could possibly be better than
a six-day, 84-mile yomp that selflessly just happens to link 51 pubs
across the Peak District.
The
recently published Inn Way To The Peak District - the latest
in Mark Reid's hostelry-centric series - is exactly that. Mark
reckons he walked over 650 miles researching the book and visited
over 100 pubs to select the best.
Starting and finishing In Hayfield on the western edge of the Dark
Peak, the route wends its way via Hathersage, Baslow, Youlgrave,
Tideswell and Castelton back to Hayfield via some cracking trails all
neatly illustrated with detailed, OS-based line maps - you'll need
the real thing as well.
Obviously there are detailed descriptions of pubs on the route,
but Mark's done a good job of his research, so along with the
well-written route description, you also get a load of background
information about the landscape and villages you're passing
through.
And if that weren't enough, a percentage of the sales from the
book goes towards conservation and recreation projects in the Peak
District National Park. 'You can forget about carbon footprints,'
says the introduction. 'As the only ones you leave behind will be
muddy ones!'
A really nice book and a mellow way to take in the best of the
Peak District while keeping your beer glands well and truly happy.
Definitely recommended.
