The Welsh outdoors has hit the National Lottery jackpot with the
news that £6.5 million has been ear-marked for schemes aimed at
increasing the use of the outdoors in the principality by local
people.
Wales, which - for cliche pedants - is the size of Wales, has some
of the most beautiful outdoor scenery in the UK, but despite this,
less than half of the Welsh population actually get outdoors and make
use of it.
The grant has been made via the National Opportunities Fund, which
has three main aims: first to raise the proportion of the Welsh
population using the outdoors from 40 per-cent to 60 per-cent. Next
to treble the frequency of use. And finally to to create a
traffic-free footpath which is within 10 minutes' walk of 95% of the
population.
The fund's director in Wales has asked oluntary, sporting and
statutory groups and organisations to develop ideas of how this money
can be used.
