Just days to go before the start of the 2002 Adrenalin Rush, Europe's toughest adventure race. Here's where to catch the action as it happens
The 2002 Lythgoes Adrenalin Rush - 'the toughest non-stop race in
Europe' - is, erm, rushing towards us with just three days to go
before kick off on Saturday.
After foot and mouth forced a move to Scotland for last year's
event, the race is back home in Ireland, being based in Enniskillen,
County Fermanagh, which we're reliably informed is the north west
corner of the island.
The Rush is a 300-mile plus multi-disciplined, non-stop endurance
race for teams of four, with at least one female member and can take
up to seven days. It's also notoriously tough with some seriously
necky activities.
This year, the organisers promise, will feature a longer ride and
run section than before, hores rideing, swimming, caving, sea
kayaking in the serious swell of the Atlantic and ropework to tackle
sheer cliffs. There's also a secret special discipline to keep
competitors from getting complacent.
There are some serious teams among the 44-odd entries as well,
including OUTDOORSmagic regular Chris McSweeney who captain's Team
The North Face against rivals like Team Parrot Lythgoe, a Finnish
Nokia team, and Pete James's Team UK-Not. There are also a host of
international competitors with racers from as far afield as Brazil,
Poland and South Africa.
To add spice, this year's Rush is one of the qualifying events in
the new for 2002, British Adventure Racing Championships with the
first four teams getting guaranteed entry to the series final at the
end of September.
