Now that spring's definitely edging stealthily towards us, here's a
quick heads up on this year's Keswick
Mountain Festival which takes place on 13-17 May 2009 with
onine booking now available on the festival web site.
The event is rather promisingly sponsored by Jennings Brewery and the
Ordnance Survey and has a great looking mix of practical activities
and some inspirational speakers and of course it all happens
slap, bang in the midde of the beautiful but accessible northern Lake
District. On the competitive front,
there's the second Keswick Triathlon, an adventure race and for those
with sinewy legs and short shorts, the Latrigg Fel Race.
Guided Walks
Don't panic if that all sounds a tad hardcore, there's plenty of less
extreme stuff on offer including a full programme of Guided Walks ranging
from a few hours of lowland strolling through to a full day on the
fells.
The walks programme looks good and imaginative too and includes some
scramble options. You could, for example, tackle the notorious Sharp
Edge on Blencathra - sponsored by Icebreaker and complete with free
gear for participants - or climb Blencathra before dawn and watch the
sun rise from its summit.

Then there's a trek up
Helvellyn by less popular tracks complete with
free softshell jackets for the first ten to sign up or various walks up
Skiddaw with the option to test some Aku boots along the way. You can
even go wild camping. Or take in a special interest walk and learn
about, say, photography or Beatrix Potter or learn navigation basics...
The walks are led by professionals and you do have to pay for them, but
it's one of the most imaginative programmes of its kind that we've seen
and quite a few of the walks come with added extras thanks to the
involvement of sponsorship from brands.
Speaker Programme
Plenty of
interesting looking speakers down for the event
as well. The programme includes the likes of Chris Bonington, Low
Houlding, Mike Stroud, Graeme Obree, round the world cyclist Mark
Beaumont and rower and trans-Atantic oarsman, James Cracknell. Again
all are bookable in advance.
