Lads' Mag Ridicules Dead Everest Climbers

We've come to expect epic tastelessness from lads' mags like FHM and Loaded, but yesterday's Observer highlighted a particularly nasty FHM article that ridiculed mountaineers who died on Everest.

Ed Douglas, writing in the newspaper, describes how the widow of Scottish mountaineer Mal Duff - who died in his sleep at Base Camp from unknown causes - was 'sickened' after reading sneering refererences to her husband's death in the magazine. Meanwhile mountaineer and author Joe Simpson slammed the article as 'odious'.

To make matters worse, the author of the FHM piece was Piers Pickard of fellow emap publication Trail Magazine. Frankly we've come to expect this sort of thing from the cynical London-based sensationalists who work for the likes of FHM, but for an outdoors journalist to be involved in this suggests a serious failure of judgment on Pickard's part.
