Lakes Gets Car Parking By Phone

Phone and park scheme lets you reserve a Lake District car parking space with a phone call.

A new parking by phone scheme is set to hit the Lake District this summer with motorists able to pre-book parking spaces at 16 Pay and Display car parks run by the Lake District National Park.

The scheme echos some already in action in the south of the country and is designed to reduce hassle for drivers bearing in mind that some eight million people visit the park every year. It is, maintains the Park's head of car parks, David Coxon, very straightforward to use:

“This is a great way to park your car without the hassle of finding the right coins for pay and display," he says.

“It’s very simple. You just register as a user, get a number and then enter your location and length of time you need. If you find you are at the top of Coniston Old Man, or shopping, and need longer, you simply call the number again to extend the time.

“Staff checking car parks will have mobile links to a web service showing which cars have registered. It’s an easy to use, easy to run operation and I’m sure our visitors will be pleased to have such a hassle-free way of paying for parking.”

It's already possible to pay for parking using debit and credit cards at Hawkshead, Glenridding and Coniston, but the advantage of the phone scheme is that it doesn't need new machines and is also more versatile.

The twelve-month trial period starts on 1, August 2009.

Went out in the lakes for the first time in years the other day having spent most of my mountain time over the last few years in North Wales, Scotland and the French Alps.

Is it just me or is the Lakes the worlds most attractive traffic jam which has become overpriced and overcrowded. The Hotels are very poor and expensive as are the restaurants. Now I am sure there are oasis's of quality service in this desert of shameful tourist traps but I think they are exception rather than the rule.

After a long drive, bad meal, bad nights sleep in a bad hotel you will be faced with paying extremely high car parking charges for your day in the hill.

I left the Lakes feeling that the best thing to do in the Lakes is to save your money and go to North wales or Scotland instead.

I never pay to park when i visit the Lakes but that's because i know where to park and where to avoid..

All the touristy bits!! ...........

Were you one of those ?

Did you walk any hills?

or were you just one of many day trippers cramming up the poor road system?Complaining about the food and stuff...

Where in the Lakes did you stay ???

Windermere!!!

I've just been out walking with a pal in the Lakes today. It's remarkably busy for a Monday, hardly any spaces outside pubs, campsites looking pretty full, and car parks likewise. We went somewhere off the beaten track and still found lots of people out walking, and for a while it was touch and go as to whether we would find a small free parking space for a Mini Cooper!
