Welcome back to our regular Friday
round-up of the general weather situation for the weekend
plus links to specifics for all the main UK hills. For a
particular area, scroll down and follow the links, which all
open in a new window. Once you've read it, close the window
and check out the next.
Overall: Not a great weekend for
June, Saturday looks wet except in the north of Scotland
with Sunday a little better as the low clears off to the
east.
If you've been
following our regular foot
and mouth updates, you'll know
that the overall situation pans out roughly like
this:
Peak is 90 per-cent open
Lakes has limited opening
Scotland is pretty close to normal
Snowdonia Park is normal
Dales / North Yorks Moors / Lancashire - infection means
rights of way mainly closed

Mountain Forecast
Online Weather's mountain-specific
forecast is probably the best
starting point on the web with an overall overview of the UK
plus detailed mountain area forecasts for both now and the
next three days complete with:
freezing levels, hill temperatures, wind,
cloudbase and visibility plus overall weather 'severity'
forecast.
Walking
Forecast
There's a new 'walking
forecast' option on the Ananova
site complete with clickable map for main walking areas.
Much more basic than the Online Weather version though with
just minimum and maximum temps and a little weather
symbol.

The National Forecasts
• Online
Weather's Mountain Forecast makes
mildy depressing reading with cold and cloudy weather
forecast for most mountain ranges until Sunday as a deep
depression hangs tough over the UK. Hill top temperatures
between 3 and 10 degrees C - and this is June?
• The
Met Office national forecast
looks grim for Saturday, but with things improving on the
Sunday as the low pressure area starts to clear from
Scotland and the west of the country.
• Three-day
pressure analysis animation from
the Met Office shows that low sitting over the UK on
Saturday then moving east on Sunday.
• Online
Weather for Saturday general
forecast shows gloom everywhere with rain except in the
north of Scotland, Sunday
again Scotland looks like the best bet with sunshine and
showers shown everywhere south of the border.
• Ananova's
forecast projects sunny spells
and heavy showers for Saturday.
The Bottom Line Great weekend to
be out on the hills.
In Your Pack Or On Your Back
Water/windproofs and remember it's still cool on the tops, forecast is from 3 - 10 degrees C so take a lightweight fleece and maybe a woolly or fleece hat for stops, survival bag.
Avalanche According to the
Scottish Avalanche Information Service, avalanche outlooks
today, Friday, is low or moderate everywhere with good
conditions for climbing and skiing as the mosit snow pack
freezes and consolidates. That might change as the weather
warms a little with freezing levels forecast to rise to 4000
feet at the weekend so check the latest
forecast before heading off and
be wary of floppy cornices. The Saturday outlook should be
up later today (Friday).

Climbing Updates If you have a
television handy, check out page 159 on ITV's teletext
service for their regularly updated climbing, er, updates
including temperatures on the tops and other more general
information.
• The Scottish
Avalanche Information Service is
now asleep until next winter.
• WinterNet
Scotland is a useful source for
firsthand reports for some Scottish hill areas complete with
pictures plus links to web cams - still some useful stuff,
even though it's not winter.
