Weekend 21/22 July 2001

This is our regular Friday round-up of the general weather situation for the weekend plus links to specifics for all the main UK hills. For a particular area, scroll down and follow the links, which all open in a new window. Once you've read it, close the window and check out the next. And we say, phew, wot a scorcher or at least we would if we were a tabloiid rag instead of a sophisticated outdoor web site.

At last, it's starting to look like summer, this is the start of the 'settling proccess' apparently
There may be a heatwave forecast, but it's not quite with us yet - apparently. Watch out for isloated thundery showers

Overall: Things are looking up with Saturday very hot and Sunday likewise. There's still going to be some cloud around and the possibility of isolated thundery showers, so don't leave the waterproof behind chaps

In Your Pack Or On Your Back A lightweight waterproof, sun hat or cap, lots of sunscreen, neck and arm protection and don't skimp on water. For hints on staying hydrated check out this article on OUTDOORSmagic and for general information on heat, check out this piece on BIKEmagic.com

Access - if you've been following our regular foot and mouth updates, you'll know that the overall situation pans out roughly like this:

As of this Friday, everything bar areas of existing infection is supposed to be open - so one in the eye for the foot-dragging councils in areas like Lincolnshire. Even Lancashire is opening paths up where possible, despite the protests of the NFU.

Peak is 90 per-cent open - Derbyshire now 100 per-cent away from the one outbreak area
Lakes has limited opening - more paths being risk assesed, big openings from August 1
Scotland is pretty close to normal
Snowdonia Park is normal
Dales / North Yorks Moors / Lancashire - infection closes many rights of way, but more opening.
see the links below for individual area access.

The National Forecasts

Online Weather's Mountain Forecast has temperatures on the tops around 14-15 degrees C, which is twice what they were last week but with a lot of cloud in the NW. The weather\s settling though, but there could be odd thundery showers in mountain areas. Light winds, cloud and sunny spells but warm at last.

The Met Office reckons Saturday is going to be a scorcher everywhere except Scotland, where it'll rain a bit early on, a bit cloudier on Sunday with isolated thundery showers developing.

Three-day pressure analysis animation shows what's going on with high pressure over the UK for once, hurrah.

Online Weather for Saturday mostly bright and sunny with isolated showers late on, Sunday less sunny with a weak weather front moving in but still very warm.

Climbing Updates If you have a television handy, check out page 159 on ITV's teletext service for their regularly updated climbing, er, updates including temperatures on the tops and other more general information.

Scottish Avalanche Information Service is now asleep until next winter.

WinterNet Scotland is a useful source for firsthand reports for some Scottish hill areas complete with pictures plus links to web cams - still some useful stuff, even though it's not winter.
