Weekend 17/18 Feb 2001

Welcome to our regular Friday round-up of the general weather situation for the weekend plus links to specifics for all the main UK hills. For a particular area, scroll down and follow the links, which all open in a new window. Once you've read it, close the window and check out the next.

Looks like a good weekend for hillwalking with an area of high pressure promising dry, mainly bright weather over the weekend everywhere except for the far NW of Scotland, though not everyone agrees on that. Climbing looks less certain - ideal conditions today, Friday, but the freezing level's set to rise to around 4000 feet at the weekend.

Mountain Forecast

Online weather's mountain-specific forecast is definitely the best starting point on the web with an overall overview of the UK plus detailed mountain area forecasts for both now and the next three days complete with: freezing levels, hill temperatures, wind, cloudbase and visibility plus overall weather 'severity' forecast

The National Forecasts

Online Weather's Mountain Forecast for today, Friday, shows scary bright sunshire in most places with freezing levels around 3000 feet with the promise of several days of high pressure to come keeping the weather fine for the weekend. Higher Scottish peaks like the Ben and the Gorms will be closer to minus 4 or so high up. Freezing levels rising over the weekend to around 4000 or 5000 feet, winds looking generally moderate.

The Met Office promises patchy rain in the north of Scotland on Saturday, otherwise dry with sunny spells after frost and fog clear. Clearer and brighter on Sunday but cloudier north of the border.

Three-day pressure analysis animation from the Met Office shows an area of high pressure sitting over the UK for the next few days, hence the brighter, settled weather though front over the very north of Scotland.

Online Weather for Saturday general forecast shows bright in the south, sunny spells in the north and - help - a belt of fog across the centre of the country, Sunday bright everywhere except the north west of Scotland.

Ananova's forecast says much of the UK will be dry with patchy cloud and some sunny spells after the clearance of early fog and frost. The dry, quiet weather is expected to continue on Sunday with some sunshine once any overnight fog and frost have cleared.

The Bottom Line Great weekend to be out on the hills.

In Your Pack Or On Your Back Water/windproofs, hat, gloves... decent insulation layer for stops cos it's cold out there, survival bag. Crampons and axe if you're heading up where there's snow or the prospect of meltwater seeping onto paths. The Peak mud should be molten...

Avalanche According to the Scottish Avalanche Information Service, avalanche outlooks today, Friday, is low or moderate everywhere with good conditions for climbing and skiing as the mosit snow pack freezes and consolidates. That might change as the weather warms a little with freezing levels forecast to rise to 4000 feet at the weekend so check the latest forecast before heading off and be wary of floppy cornices. The Saturday outlook should be up later today (Friday).

.

Climbing Updates If you have a television handy, check out page 159 on ITV's teletext service for their regularly updated climbing, er, updates including temperatures on the tops and other more general information.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service is now running regular daily reports including climbing condition forecasts and is currently - Friday - saying that the avalanche forecast is generally considerable - but check for specific areas - cornices building and freeze-thaw cycle should be improving conditions.

WinterNet Scotland is a useful source for firsthand reports for some Scottish hill areas complete with pictures plus links to web cams - check it out.
