Le Camping C'est Chic...

Oh dear, apparently camping has stumbled into a world of high fashion trendiness and is the latest cool pursuit of the professional classes. Here are the sites to avoid ;-)

Camping is suddenly cool, well according to today's Guardian newspaper it is anyway... Apparently we're 'flocking to the great outdoors' says Emily Wilson.

Our Emily has uncovered a 'renaissance' - this is the Guardian you know - in camping, it's chic now you know, and market research agency Mintel says, rather improbably, that the new campers out there are predomiantely ABs, ie: top-end professional types.

Apparently there was even a luxury camping option at Glastonbury this year with the likes of Kate Moss - a model, m'ludd - paying almost £6,000 per couple to stay in a secluded encampment of luxurious Indian tents. And you though the National Trust site in Wasdale was pricey...

Speaking of which, the Wasdale site features in a list of four übercool sites, which you may want to avoid for a few months. The others are Bryher campsite, Bryher Island, Isles of Scilly, Snowdon Valley Camping, at the foot of Snowdon - wherever that is, Rhyd Ddu we think - and North Morte Farm, Woolacombe, Devon.

Ah well, good to know that we're suddenly cool and trendy - expect to see Naomi Campbell emerging from the next door tent some time soon, so make sure you don't annoy her with your late night chat...

Interesting feature in the Gruniard today about the rise in popularity of camping, fueled by an improvement in kit quality.

To quote: "Certain camping brands now hold great cachet, and whether you're heading for the high alps or a holiday park in the Lake Disrict, there is certainly such a thing as the righ tent."

Tantalisingly, 'the right tent' wasn't named, although I'm sure it will have been of the 2 man, lightweight, 4 season variety (aka the holy grail)

The article also identified 4 'camping classics'
- Bryher campsite, Isles of Scilly
- Wasdale Head (naturally!)
- Snowdon Valley
- North Morte Farm, Woolacolme, Devon.

Now, I'm sure those OM-ers of a Scottish nationalist bent are not going to let this selection pass without a comment or two.

Where exactly do they mean by the "Snowdon Valley" ???

According to Sky News this morning, it's not "Camping" anymore, it's "Le Camping".

As for Scotland being missed out, it doesn't surprise me as we're talking about an increase in "fair weather" camping. Not really an option up here :o)
