Life and Limb - an evening with Jamie Andrew

Mountaineer, athlete and quadruple amputee tells his story

Tackling a mountain can be hard at the best of times. For Jamie Andrew, a quadruple amputee who lost his hands and feet to frostbite in an alpine storm in 1999, it is more than just your average challenge.

Despite his set-back, Jamie was back at work within 4 months, and almost as quickly started to climb and hill walk again. Five years later he rock climbs, mountaineers, has taught himself to ski and has run the London marathon.

His slideshow and talk is entitled "Life and Limb" and recounts the story of his accident, rescue and subsequent rehabilitation, illustrated with slides. It starts at 8pm on 10th November, with doors open from 7.30pm and the bar open afterwards.

If the event makes a profit, a donation will be made to the Jules Cartwright Memorial Fund, established by Jules's family following his tragic death in the Alps earlier this year. The fund is intended to help aspiring guides and mountaineering instructors to finance their training.

Tickets are on sale at the Sevenoaks Playhouse box office (01732 450175) price £6.00. Contact rnaylor@itl.uk.com for further information. Advance booking is strongly recommended, as the last similar event in 2001 sold out 10 days before.

I was at one of his lectures in Glasgow two weeks ago. His story of survival and then his rehabilitation is truely inspirational.
