Kenton Cool and Keith Partridge break open the bubbly to celebrate the 8,848 likes mark on the slopes of Everest. Kenton is set to go for the summit for the tenth time on Sunday.

Remember the BMC's campaign to exceed 8,848 'likes' on Facebook in exchange for free swag and a lovie dovie personal message from Kenton Cool on the slopes of Everest - coincidentally 8,848 metres in height, which is odd ? Well, the affection-starved mountain lovies have passed that target successfully, but like all high-achieving mountaineers, they're kicking on regardless.

Raise £1,000 For Porters' Progress

The new aim is 10,000 'likes' by 4pm today, Friday and, if they hit the target, they'll be gathering up £1,000 in used tenners and sending it over to the guys at Porters' Progress. Of course it's all nakely manipulative in a horribly Machiavellian way, but we can't think of a better mountain-orientated cause offhand than Porters' Progress, so we absolutely, unequivocably, urge you to get over to  www.facebook.com/BritishMountaineeringCouncil grit your teeth and pretend to like the BMC.

You could also still be in the running for a random prize of that video message from Kenton plus a pair of jackets from Icebreaker and Sherpa Adventure Gear.

Even if you're not a big fan of social meeja, you can find out about Porters' Progress at  www.portersprogressuk.org plus Kenton Cool groupies - and it's a rock star name if ever we heard one, can follow his progress and the story of the Olympic gold medal at  at www.thebmc.co.uk/kenton-cool-everest-olympic-medals-expedition.

Finally, while we're on the subject of the British Mountaineering Council, they now have a new President and Vice Presidents in the shape of Scott Titt, who takes over from Rab Carrington as the main man, and Kate Philips and Mike Watson who become Vice Presidents of the climbing and hill-walking organisation.

Good news on this one - the BMC passed the 10,000 likes mark, so Porters' Progress does indeed get a cheque for £1,000. Hats off to the BMC for supporting a great cause.
