A documentary charting the making of the BAFTA-winning film of Touching The Void will be premiered at next month's Outdoor Show at the NEC.

The film is going to be screened in the Berghaus Super Theatre through all three days of the Show between appearances by speakers like legendary mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott, and two of the very best climbers in the world today, brothers Alex and Thomas Huber, who are flying over especially for the event.

The Making of Touching The Void, curiously enough, charts the making of the film, following the crew and Oscar winning director Kevin Macdonald through the two years it took to produce. OMers will be particularly interested in the sections covering the filming of action sequences on location in the Alps and on Siula Grande itself in the Peruvian Andes.

The acclaimed and highly realistic climbing sequences were recreated by guide and mountain movie specialist Brian Hall and include filming inside a crevasse, in real blizzards and the dramatic cutting of the rope moment described by the Simpson stunt double in the current Berghaus brochure.

There's also an interview with McDonald and voiceovers by both Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. Definitely worth a look.

DVD Launch and Special Offer

The documentary premiere coincides with the launch of the Touching The Void DVD on 5 April. The icing on the cake for show-goers is that a special leaflet giving £2 discount on the DVD at all HMV stores between 5 and 11 April will be available from the Berghaus stand and the Super Theatre. Can't be bad...

Which will make it how much?

If you go to Touchingthevoid.com then the pop up says you can pre-order it for £15.99 plus £2.00p&p whilst the RRP is RRP £19.99.

But I've discovered that the Theatr Gwynedd near me (in Bangor), is showing it on 18th April, so my climbing club might go along. I am anyway!

Cheapest prices for the dvd I can find are www.splashdvd.com at £12.99 and HMV online at £13.99. Hopefully HMW will have it in their shops at that price, and with an extra £2 off from the Outdoors Show it becomes really cheap at £11.99. and THEN I can use my student card and get another 10% off. Bringing it to about £10.80! Bargain
