Cameron McNeish, president of the Ramblers Association in
Scotland, has called for new legislation to control the country's
deer population.
McNeish's comments followed on from a demonstration by gamekeepers
against a cull of red deer on the Glenfeshie Estate, who he
reportedly compared to a 'rural rent-a-mob'. He believes that 'too
many Scottish gamekeepers and their employers will do anything to
stop effective culling of deer populations. '
The result, he says, is that native Scottish woodlands are unable
to regenerate to the detriment of the landscape and the outdoors and
he has called for new legislation 'to ensure that the public interest
takes priority over the private exploitation of one of Scotland's
finest natural resources.'
