According to a story in yesterday's Observer newspaper, the
'world's greatest living mountaineer' Reinhold Messner is embroiled
in a controversial argument with fellow climbers over the death of
his brother Gunther on Nanga Parbat.
In a new book, Messner - now an MEP - says that his altitude
sickness-stricken brother died when the pair attempted to descent the
Diamir Face in extreme conditions and became separated. Other
climbers on the mountain at the time, including Messner's former
friend Max Engelhardt von Kienlin, claim that Messner descended
alone, leaving his dying brother behind.
Messner reportedly claims that his accusers are driven by jealousy
and has challenged them to either produce evidence to back their
assertions or apologise. For the full
story see the Observer web site.

Messner Mountain Museum in Summer 2003 - see here.
