More Rockfall In Lords Rake

The unstable pillar in the popular Scafell gulley is looking even more precarious thanks to further rockfall in the area. One to avoid this weekend we reckon.

There's been another rockfall incident in Lord's Rake on Scafell with the existing pile of rubble threatening the popular route becoming even less stable.

'Hello, I'm a loose, detached pillar'

Wasdale-based OUTDOORSmagic member Guy Newbold has been carrying regular reports on his Felltreks web site and popped up to the Rake yesterday to assess the latest situation.

He found that the large detached pillar which is sitting precariously in the gulley threatening anything beneath it was still in a similar position - ie: still there, still looking unstable - but there has been new rockfall around it with even more loose rock and rubble appearing in the vicinity of the detached pillar.

'The area around the detached pillar of rock continues to erode producing rock and rubble as it does so,' says Guy. 'At some stage the whole lot will come down, it just appears to be taking its time.' He concludes by suggesting that 'if you do go into the rake watch what you hold on to and keep an eye out or better still find another route instead.

That's advice which we'd echo. You'd be unlucky to be in the Rake at the precise time the whole tottering mass comes down, but when it does it'll sweep the entire gully line and it won't be pretty. So if you're up in the area and fancy a trog up Scafell, check out the alternatives.

For detailed information on the situation plus pictures of the rockfall see the Felltreks web site where Guy also posts daily photographs from Wasdale and the local weather forecast.

There has been a further rock fall in Lords Rake on top of one earlier this year. This means the Rake is no VERY unstable and best avoided.
