The North Face team mountaineer Simone
Moro along with his climbing partner Denis Urubko has
been awarded the prestigious 2009
Eiger Award in Grindelwald, Switzerland, an honour which
the organisers dub 'the Oscar of mountaineering'.
The award was launched in 2008 and honours “people
who have, through their mountaineering achievements, brought the value
and fascination of mountaineering and the mountains closer to the
general public”. In other words it's about
recognising inspirational and explorational mountaineering feats.
Moro summits Makalu last
winter
Moro and Urubko are both renowned alpinists with their most recent
achievement being the first winter asccent of Makalu (8463m) in
February 2009, a climb regarded as 'the last great challenge for high
altitude Himalayan mountaineering in winter'. Makalu is the world's
fifth highest mountain.
Moro's career spans some 16 years and around 40 expeditions and has
taken him from his native Dolomites to rock, ice and altitude all over
the world. He also made the first winter ascent of Shishapangma
(8027m).
