Munro Baggers All Aquiver

Decision on Foinaven's possible Munro status expected today - one more to bag?

Baggers are all aquiver today as they wait to hear whether or not Foinaven, previously thought to be sub-3000 foot, has been accorded the magical Munro status.

The mountain was re-measured by surveyors last month using highly accurate satellite positioning equipment to see if was actually higher than previous estimates. If there are an extra 16 inches, the Munro tables will have to be revised and thousands of 'compleaters' will have an extra summit to aim for...

There are currently 284 official Munros, as recognised by the Munro Society but both Foinaven and Beinn Dearg in Torridon are on the brink of being upgraded.

Expect much gnashing of teeth if the pair are accorded Munro status plus ethical debates on the validity of previous 'compleations' :-)

If you want more details on Munros, take a look at www.munromagic.com - no relation we hasten to add...
