Expanded areas and more frequent forecasts south of the border from the Mountain Weather Information Service.

The Mountain Weather Information Service – MWIS - is, along with the Met Office mountain area forecasts, arguably the best specialist source of mountain weather information out there and has now expanded its forecast areas south of the Scottish border.

The Peak District area forecast which used to appear only on Friday through to Sunday are now available seven days a week. In addition, the Peak District area forecast has been expanded to include the Yorkshire Dales and areas between including parts of the southern Pennines and the Forest of Bowland, which lies to the east of the M6 north of Bolton.

We'll reserve judgement for now, but we're none too sure about the combining of the Peak and Dales forecast, we know from past experience that the two areas can have vastly different weather patterns and in fact, the Peak itself can vary from one side of the Pennine to the other.

The Dales situation on the eastern side of the country means that in general they have a tendency to be drier and, unlike the Peak, aren't as badly affected by fronts moving in from the Atlantic and discharging rain as they rise over the hills. If you want a specific Yorkshire Dales forecast, the Met Office mountain forecasts cover the area separately.

In addition, the MWIS Snowdonia National Park forecast also expands into a seven days a week forecast.

Well mostly very good news this - they are really nice forecasts these, especially the way they describe what'll happen to foolish people braving the weather ;)

I'd have thought that a combined Peak District/Dales forecast was likely to work at least as sensibly as their current combined Lake District/North Pennines one! Or most of their areas in Scotland come to that :)
(they generally seem to do quite well by way of the text describing which bits will be most affected by what etc.).

Yes, I'd agree, they really are good forecasts, but the Peak and Dales are often so different that I suspect it'll be hard to manage it - I guess the extra work wouldn't be feasible or they'd have produced a distinct Dales forecast. Be interesting to see how well it does or doesn't work.

You really can't go out without a forecast and its important for business also. Gear shops generally do better trade when people are off the hill at the end of the day or when rain is forecast. Or even better when its a downpour in peak holiday season!
