It was a whole world of nudity at John o'Groats yesterday as the
Naked Rambler, this time with his girlfriend Melanie, completed the
end to end walk for the second time and yes, he was naked.
Speaking to BBC Five Live yesterday, a slightly dazed sounding
Stephen Gough explained that things had been okay until the wind
rather cheekily swung round to the north leaving the couple rather
exposed to icy blasts.
According to newspaper reports, their first act on arrival at the
most northerly point in Great Britian was to put their clothes on and
you can't really blame them for that.
During the second of his treks from Lands End to John O'Groats,
Gough was arrested nine times and his girlfriend, Melanie Roberts,
five. His ongoing campaign to show that nakedness is nothing to be
ashamed of has captured the imagination of the media and the public
with endless press reports culminating in a TV documentary late last
year.
This morning, the Guardian actually ran a leader
comment titled 'In praise of... the naked rambler', which
contrasted the generally accepting attitude of the public with the
police who arrested him regularly, twice during the final, rather
parky, week of his latest walk.
