The National Trust own, or manage, great swathes of our countryside - particularly in upland Britain. The NT have now compiled a series of downloadable routes around some of their most popular properties, in PDF format so you can print them out to take with you. England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been divided into 12 distinct regions with a selection of properties and routes for each area.

The North West area covers Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire with walks from the classic Sty Head and grains Gill to more leisurely walks around Cheshire's Alderley Edge. Most of the walks are between 2 and 5 miles, so perfect as introduction walks for newcomers or a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. The route descriptions are fairly basic, with a few accopanying photographs and a route map with designated points of interest along the way. Points of interest include geological, historical or archaeological highlights along the route along with classic viewpoints.

Although the route guides aren't quite detailed enough to use on the ground for directions, and there's no GPS file, they give a good outline and have built in links for public transport and combied with a map provide useful information on POIs that may otherwise go un-noticed. You can find routes from all 12 regions by visiting the National Trust website.
