One of the most popular walks around Derwentwater in the
northern Lakes is getting an upgrade with the Chinese
Bridge over the River Derwent due to be replaced
with a wider,
contemporary version this summer.
The new £68,000 bridge has been designed to accommodate
wheelchair and pram users and will feature steel beams supporting
recycled plastic decking. It's being paid for by Heritage Lottery Fund
and supported by Bassenthwaite Reflections, with the work expected to
be completed in August.
Head of Reflections, Martin Varley, said: “We are all very excited by
this development as it will make a profound difference to countless
numbers of people.
“This is a very popular and heavily used route but, as it nears the
Borrowdale valley, the narrow bridge across the Derwent was a
frustrating obstacle for those with mobility problems. We are committed
to helping provide access for all and are delighted to see this
important project getting underway.”
The footpath around the bridge will be closed on 6 July when
dismantling of the old 1938 bridge will begin with closure and
alternative route notices being posted nearby, though the National Park
says that disruption will be kept to a minimum.
