Coming quite soon to a climbing wall near you is a new-style,
ladder-type leading competition from the BMC that should allow
climbers to compete at centres right across the country.
The idea is that climbing walls will have six routes set up
ranging from F6b to F8a and they'll be open to anyone climbing the
wall. All you need to do is stump up £1 for a scorecard.
Leads will be on sight - no practicing allowed - and the belayer
will fill in the scorecard on an honesty basis depending on whether
you climb the route or not and on how many attempts you make.
Each wall will collect its own cards and send them to the BMC with
the results to be published on the web site. When all the
competitions have been completed each competitor's highest three scores
will be added together and those with the highest score will qualify
for a national final to be run along similar lines to the present
BLCC competition with prizes and everything else that goes with a
major national final.
It's something a bit different and designed to help make climbing
walls a bit more interesting plus provide good training for
on-sighting as well.
The competitions will kick off in October and run over the winter
months. Full details at www.thebmc.co.uk.
