We've already told you about new Weatherline
Fell Top Assessor Jason
Taylor who will be climbing Helvellyn every day
to report on conditions, turns out that Jason has also put
together a selection of safety tips for anyone venturing into the hills
this winter.
- Check a mountain specific weather forecast for the area
where you will be walking. Where available, check a ground conditions’
report.
- Choose a route suitable for conditions, your equipment and
ability. If you are unsure, lower your sights.
- Do not over estimate your ability, know when to turn back.
- Carry enough kit to look after yourself if something goes
wrong, or the weather changes.
- Always carry a map and compass and know how to use
them. Do not rely on a GPS alone.
- Take extra clothing layers, as well as a spare hat and
gloves
- Carry a torch/headtorch. Winter conditions usually mean
people underestimate route times and end up in darkness.
- Always take food and drink.
- Tell someone reliable where you have gone and how long you
are likely to be.
- In winter conditions take ice axe and crampons and know how
to use them.
- Goggles are essential in snow and wind.
- Wear four- season stiffened boots which are compatible with
your crampons.
- If in doubt – turn back!
