New from Vertebrate
Publishing is the latest in its series of walking guide
books, Day Walks In The
Peak District and it's every bit as good as the first
volume with the same title.
Put together by the same team, the book features 20 new day-length
walks in the Peak and has all the same practical virtues as other
Vertebrate guides. That means an easily-portable paperback format, a
clear overview and detailed step-by-step directions for each route,
Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping for navigational precision and, last
but not least, some lovely, inspirational photography of the area
covered by each route.
In classic Vertebrate fashion, the book is broken down into themed
sections, in this case walks are divided by theme. So there are
sections for 'The High Moors', 'Hills, Tors and Edges' and 'Limestone
Country' with coverage right across the region.
None of which would make much odds if the routes weren't up to scratch,
but the good news - based on the ones we're familiar with at least - is
that they are. In fact the ones local to OM HQ on the eastern side of
the Peak are some of our all-time faves.
We'd call them classics with a twist. The Kinder walk from Hayfield,
for example, follows The Snake Path up towards Middle Moor, which has fantastic views over to Kinder - rather than just meandering along the road - before
continuing up William Clough and along the edge of the plateau. That
means there's something there both for newcomers to the area and those
who've walked there before but want a bit of variation on the old
favourites.
Another excellent guide from Vertebrate. Price is £12.95
and you can find full details at www.v-publishing.co.uk.
