A new exhibition
focusing on Mallory and
Irvine is due to open this spring, something that will
delight all those who still mourne the passing of the late, lamented
National Mountaineering Exhibition at Rheged.
Somewhat oddly, the exhibtion is at
the Salt Museum in Northwich, Cheshire - and yes, it really is a 'salt'
museum. The link, if you were wondering, is that both Mallory and
Irvine had Cheshire connections and came from the area.
Replicas of Mallory's
clothing, yes, they really did believe in layering.
The debate over whether the pair reached the summit of Everest in June,
1924 will probably never be definitely settled, but the idea of the
Northwich exhibition is to focus on the 'Two Cheshire Men' behind the
legend and their links with the county. There should be plenty of
artifacts from 1924 along with a selection of the items found with
Mallory's body in 1999 and a display of the replica clothing produced
by the Mountain Heritage Trust.
Should be fascinating stuff for anyone interested in mountaineering
history and Everest in particular. The exhibition is due to run at the
Salt Museum from 11 September to 8 November and then at the Williamson
Art Gallery, Birkenhead until the end of January, 2010.
