Bad news from the Brecon Beacons where a fresh outbreak of foot
and mouth has closed Pen y Fan just a week after it was re-opened to
walkers.
The new outbreak at on Modrydd Farm in Libanus near Brecon is
apparently the first confirmed in Wales for four weeks and coincided
with the day chosen for the re-opening of all non-infected footpaths
in Powys.
According to the BBC: 'Officials will slaughter 2,000 sheep, 2,000
lambs and 159 cattle on the (six) satellite farms. At Modrydd, 600
sheep, 600 lambs and 80 cattle were slaughtered immediately.'
Around 75 per-cent of Powys is designated as an infected area and
there are fears that the latest outbreak could see the disease spread
by sheep from the infected farm which have been on the high
fells.
The recent hot weather however, is good news, since the virus
prefers cold conditions.
