Just launched is a new website covering walking and cycling opportunities in the County Durham area complete with routes, accommodation and booking details and information on what's on in the region.
County Durham is one of those areas that's often overlooked in favour of better known destinations like the Lakes and Dales, but has some stunning moorland terrain as well as classic cycling routes. Weardale, in particular, has a distinctive, wild feel to it that's reminiscent of Northumberland.
Long distance paths running through the area include the Weardale Way, Teesdale Way and Pennine Way and for cyclists, the C2C, Walney 2 Wear and Whitbyand North Sea Cycle Route. In addition, Hamsterley Forest near Bishop Auckland has a great mix of trail centre singletrack and more natural moorland riding for mountain bikers.
A quick browse of the site at www.thisisdurham.com/outdoors suggests that there's plenty to get your teeth into with the ability to browse by area, theme, difficulty and other criteria, plus you can rather handily book accommodation while you're at it.
Derfinitely an area to look at if you fancy a change and some proper canny north-eastern hospitality.
