One of the great, but lesser known, Scottish 24-hour mountain
challenges has been done in a new winter record time by Gary
Tompsett. Seen here at the finish and looking worryingly
fresh.
The Ramsay Round is an arduous challenge beginning with a round of
the Mamores, followed by Beinn na Lap, Chno Dearg, Stob Coire
Sgriodain and the Stob Coires (Easains), then returning back along
the Grey Corries, Aonachs before finishing on Ben Nevis. It's around
60 miles long and includes a calf-killing 28,000 feet of ascent.
The men's summer record stands at 18 hours and 23 minutes, but
until November 2002, the round had never been done in winter when
Glyn Jones of Dumfries did it in 53hrs 34mins. Tompsett, completed
the round in a remarkable 32hrs 48mins and described his attempt as
'all pretty straightforward'.
So if you're bored and want something straightforward to do on a
long winter's day, it could be the answer. Hmmm... Gary's full
abbreviated account will be up later on.
