New Rockfall Hits Lord's Rake
A new rockfall has hit Lord's Rake on Scafell depositing loose rock in the gulley and further destabilising an existing rocky whopper. Worth avoiding...
More drama in Lord's Rake on Scafell where further rock fall has,
apparently, destabilised the very large rock perched ominously above
the easy but popular scramble and deposited a load of loose rock in
the rake itself.
The original rock came to rest just after the start of the West
Wall Traverse earlier this year and there is a warning notice at the
start of the route suggesting that it may not be a good idea to
venture further up.
Wasdale local and OM member Guy Newbold, who is also a member of
the local MRT says on felltreks.co.uk that 'the new rock fall which
is substantial in itself , has also further destabilised the loose
block formed by the first rock fall.'
He goes on to suggest that although Lord's Rake is a public right
of way and still technically open to anyone, 'unless hundreds of tons
of loose, unstable rock poised ready to fall is your thing , I would
advise using another route to Scafell. Foxes Tarn is a longer but
MUCH safer option for the time being.'
For the latest
news and a summary of Wasdale's current weather situation, see
the Felltreks
site.

There has been a further rock fall in Lords Rake on top of one earlier this year. This means the Rake is no VERY unstable and best avoided. Further details on <WWW.Felltreks.co.uk>
