Writing books is becoming a bit of a cottage industry for members of the Tenzing family, with the latest, by Tenzing Norgay's grandson Tashi being launched to the world by Sir Edmund Hillary.

The book follows on from Jamling Tenzing Norgay's 'Touching My Father's Soul' and the original Tenzing's 'Tiger of the Snows'. The latest addition aims to honour the Sherpa race through the telling of their part in mountaineering history and will be published in the UK by Harper Collins.

Theres's a transcript of an interview with Hillary and Tenzing which went out on Australian Radio on the ABC site, some interesting comments, including Hillary's observation that:

' My reaction wasn't one of extreme excitement really. I think Tenzing was a lot more excited than I was. I just put my hand out to shake hands with Tenzing, but that wasn't good enough for him.

'He threw his arms around my shoulder and gave me a hug and I threw my arms around his shoulder, so we gave each other a good hug on the top of the mountain to celebrate our success.'

OUTDOORSmagic editor Jon Doran spent several weeks with Tashi Tenzing in Nepal in 1999, writing this profile of a man who successfully combines elements of east and west and Sherpa and European mountaineering philosophy.
