Edale Mountain Rescue Team is launching a new event, the Nine Edges Challenge to help raise desperately needed funds for a new base.

The Challenge is due to take place on Sunday 17 September starting from Ladybower and is a 20-mile run or hike open to walkers, climbers and runners with around 600 feet of height gain. It doesn't take a genius to deduce that it includes nine gritstone edges where climbers have the option of completing a route of their choice.

Entry costs £10 per person, but you also have the option of raising sponsorship money from family, friends, colleagues and anyone else you can persuade to cough up.

Where?

The start is at the Fairholmes car park at Ladybower with walkers and climbers setting off any time between 7.30 am and 9.30 am with registration opening at 7.15 am. There will be a mass start for runners at 10 am.

The route finishes at the Robin Hood pub near Baslow and transport will be provided back to the start point. There are also set to be various rest and refreshment stops along the way, fortuitously, at pubs...

Why?

The Edale MRT's existing base is being demolished. The Lafarge cement works has offered the team space at their base but the team urgently needs funds to construct a new building.

All outdoors people will appreciate the sterling work of mountain rescue volunteers who generously give their time to help others on the hill. Last year the Edale team were called out 113 times to incidents on top of regular training sessions.

That's why this event is so important, so if you're free that weekend, why not go for a walk in a beautiul area and raise money for a good cause along the way?

How?

The aim is to cover the 20 miles between Fairholmes and Baslow with climbers climbing a route of their choice on each of the nine edges, namely Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North, Burbage South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardoms and Birchens. Refreshments will be available at key points.
