Weekend Weather 12th-13th April 2003

This is our regular Friday round-up of what's in store for the weekend. Latest news on the excellent Online Weather mountain forecast, is that it's now due back in early February, which is about erm last month and now the month before. but it's still not quite up... So will the 'Indian Winter' cold snap continue?

The
Met Office says Saturday's going to be mainly dry with sunny spells and some isolated showers. Brighter in east, temperatures between about 9 and 12 C, light winds except on southern coasts.

Sunday looks bright and sunny in Wales and northern England, cloudier with sunny spells elsewhere. Temperatures about the same as Saturday but windier so will feel cooler.

The
BBC Weather site uses Met Office data, but is generally easier to follow.

Saturday going to get early mist but clearing to leave things mostly dry and bright with sunny spells but some cloudier periods. A few showers mostly in far north of Scotland, far SW England and maybe N Ireland. War (sic) in teh sun.

Sunday dry bright sunny start, becoming cloudy, wet and windy in southwest and later in N I reland, a few showers elsewhere as well. Warm in the west, chilly near eastern coasts.

Check BBC's specific areas: Fort William / Kendal / Betws-y-Coed / Aviemore / Skipton / Glossop (Peak) / Brecon / Milton Keynes. Eastern Scotland looks the best bet if you want to stay dry...

Saturday's general forecast from Online Weather cloudy with sunny spells. Sunday cloudy with rain in the west. Hmmmm.... Still no mountain weather.

Scotland Online Mountain Weather - Handy specialist mountain forecasts for Scottish east and west Highland areas and, strangely, Snowdonia and the Lake District. Well worth a look.

Wasdale weather - daily reports updated before 10 am, a local forecast and a current pic - always worth a loook just for the piccy. - from OM member Guy Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Straight from the horse's mouth.

Scottish Avalanche Information Service - forecasts at the time of writing are low, check before heading out for the latest situation, Great Slab in Coirre Lochain, northern corries may, apparently, avalanche any time soon, so make sure you're not under it...

OUTDOORSmagic web cam page Links to all the UK mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've missed, please drop us a line and we'll add it to the page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down. Ho hum...
Getting slightly warmer again and mostly dry with sunny spells too
... nowt really, this is pretty good for April.

Verdict Starting to warm up a little after a cooler few days mid-week, which is definitely a good thing, though it'll feel cooler in the livelier wind on Sunday but warm in the sun. Mostly dry, but potential for the odd shower. Looks like a good one to us.

Craven Disclaimer Hey come on, we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different from down in the valleys.
