Weekend Weather
11th-12th October 2003
|
Our regular Friday round-up
of what's in store for the weekend. And it's hello autumn...
Or at least that's how it's supposed to be. Hot news this
week is that the Met Office is now providing mountain
weather forecasts for Wales, Snowdonia and the Beacons -
links from
this page. The goods news is that
it's looking good for the OM Meeet-Up in Edale this weekend.
New on the web is
Nevisport's mountain weather
forecast covering the main UK
mountain areas, updated twice a day and giving both a
general overview and a three-day outlook with useful stats
like wind speed, freezing levels and both valley and summit
temperatures. There's also a general UK forecast.
Good to see a mountain specific forecast
back at long last. Check the site for individual data. If
you're off to the Peak District, freezing levels have
dropped to just over 9,000 feet... Not that bad then.
The Met
Office
outlook for Saturday is
for sunny spells everywhere, mainly dry but patchy rain from
the southwest moving up into Wales and Northern Ireland
later. Temperatures between about 10 and 13C, in other
worlds, looking good.
Sunday Looks broadly similar but
with more cloud over the northern half of the UK and winds
getting up to 10-15 mph, so feeling cooler.
New Mountain Forecasts New this
week, excellent online forecasts covering the National Park
areas of Snowdonia
and the Brecon
Beacons. Good to see the Met
Office covering mountain areas, though this appears to be an
initiative of the Wales Tourist Board and the Met Office in
Cardiff.

The BBC
Weather site uses Met Office
data, but is generally easier to follow. Streaming video
weather forecasts also available on the site.
Saturday Mostly dry with sunny
spells but south and southwest cloudier with added patchy
drizzle extending to Northern Ireland and Wales later
on.
Sunday Mist or fog early on, fine
and dry in the east with sunny spells. West looking cloudier
with some rain or drizzle.
Check BBC's specific areas:
Fort
William / Kendal
/ Betws-y-Coed
/ Aviemore
/ Skipton
/ Glossop
(Peak) / Brecon
/ Milton
Keynes. Eastern Scotland looks
the best bet if you want to stay dry...
Saturday's
forecast seems at variants with the Met Office with clouds
and patchy rain north of the border and mainly dry and
pleasant with sunny periods in southern England.
Sunday
is going to be dry and mild in most areas, but locally
mostly cloudy with a risk of patchy drizzle especially in
southern and eastern areas. Winds moderate.

Wasdaleweb weather - daily
reports updated before 10 am, a local forecast and a current
pic - always worth a loook just for the piccy. - from OM
member Guy Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Guy's
just invented Wasdale
Web and you should be directed
there automatically from the link above.
Wet day today, but looking better for the
weekend.
New on the site, the Wasdaleweb
Webcam , though right now it's
having teething problems or maybe Wasdale's just a bit
blank. Once up and running, it should be streaming live pics
of the valley.
Scottish
Avalanche Information Service -
closed for the season, roll on next winter :-) And it is...
Not long now.

OUTDOORSmagic
web cam page Links to all the UK
mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've
missed, please drop
us a line and we'll add it to the
page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow
situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's
anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're
viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down. Ho
hum...
Much more dry and pleasant than it looks like being today,
Friday.
Some patchy drizzle in selected areas...
Verdict Nice looking autumn
weekend with Saturday promising to be quite pleasant,
particularly if you're on the OM Meet-Up in Edale. The odd
bit of patchy drizzle, so don't forget some sort of
water-resistant shell. Have a good one.
Craven Disclaimer Hey come on,
we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the
above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather
may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate
their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top
than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different
from down in the valleys.
