Weekend Weather 21-22 December 2002

This is our regular festive Friday round-up of what's in store for the weekend. Still no sign of the excellent Online Weather mountain forecast, allegedly back in January. Have a top Christmas.

The Met Office says Saturday's looking milder with rain and 'less cold' weather in the south spreading NE to most other parts. Scotland seems to be looking dry though. Sundaycloudy everywhere, rain on the eastern side of the country. If you want to see where it's been raining already - yeah, very useful - take a look at the rainfall animation.

Christmas, they say, looks unsettled but mild.

The BBC Weather site uses Met Office data, but is generally easier to follow. General outlook for Saturday says it's looking good for central and northern Scotland which will be mainly drdy, otherwise outbreaks of rain spreading from the south west, some of them heavy. Sunday unsettled everywhere, rain spreading, some of it heavy. mild but breezy.

Check BBC's specific areas: Fort William / Kendal / Betws-y-Coed / Aviemore / Skipton / Glossop (Peak) / Brecon / Milton Keynes. Uninspiring everywhere really and much milder, particularly on Sunday when the Peak and northwards suddenly jumps around 5 degrees C.

Saturday's general forecast from Online Weather has sunny periods in north east Scotland with isolated showers elsewhere, winds moderate . Sunday rain in eastern Scotland and north eastern England, cloudy with sunny intervals elsewhere with isolated showers. Temperatures mild at 10 C or more. The mountain forecast is apparently now due back in January.

Wasdale weather daily reports and a pic from OM member Guy Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Straight from the horse's mouth. The bad news is that there's still snow above 600 metres, the ice in the gullies is melting and no longer climbable as temperatures rise :-(
Scottish Avalanche Information Service - avalanche and climbing condition forecasts for five main Scottish climbing areas, not much snow around yet and avalanche outlook for today, Friday, is low.

Okay, it's not a deluge at least.
Nice week, shame about the weekend - winter taking a break.

Verdict It's been good and cold all this week with OM member Guy Newbold climbing icy ghylls in the Lakes, but the temperatures are climbing for the weekend with scattered showers in most places at some point. Not a lot of winter climbing around yet, but hey, at least it's not continuous rain. Don't forget your shell.

Craven Disclaimer Hey come on, we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different from down in the valleys.
