Ordnance Survey mapping for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and Macintosh computers is now available for the first time from RouteBuddy with complete coverage of the UK at 1:25,000 scale.

iPhone running RouteBuddy softwareThe down-loadable maps - more than 400 of them - are based on the original OS paper Explorer sheets and cost £19.99 each and can be purchased from Route Buddy's online map store.

The software itself, RouteBuddy Atlas for iPhone and iPod Touch itself is free from the iTunes App store and allows an iPhone to load and display multiple Ordnance Survey maps even when offline.

The software supports the iPhone's compass and GPS features turning it into a navigation tool and you can record tracks to display in Google Earth or using RouteBuddy's own desktop software for Macintosh computers - you can also use the programme to plan routes then transfer them to the iPhone or iPod Touch.

RouteBuddy allows you to access Ordnance Survey mapping stored on your phone wherever you are, even when there's no phone coverage and when there is, you can download new mapping from the web,

RouteBuddy Atlas supports both Mac and PC, and any iPhone or iPod touch
running iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later.

We're running RouteBuddy on a Macbook along with 1:25,000 mapping of the Peak District and initial impressions are good.

More information from www.routebuddy.com/atlas/ you can purchase the mapping now from store.routebuddy.com

Ridiculous pricing.

For those with a data contract - you can use OSBrowserR2 for free

It would have been nice to see some screen shots of it working on the Macbook to see what the interface is like - and some sort of comparison between this software and Windows based mapping software (MM, Anquet etc).

It's a bit short on detail at the moment, but confusing - can you save maps to a Macbook (and or PC) or can you only store them on your iphone - in which case how many can you store?

How does it compare to ViewRanger in actual use? Does it work on all versions of the iPhone or is it just for the latest version? How responsive is it? How well does it scroll? Is it usable with gloved fingers? Why are map prices so ridiculously high and are there any "deals" available like the 1:50k National Parks set available with all the main Windows based software?

It'll be interesting to see a proper review and see how it gets on against free apps - given that most iPhone users have an unlimited data plan free apps would seem to be the future.
