A final-ish rapid reminder that The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show at the NEC in Birmingham kicks off this Friday 17 March, 2006 no less and runs over the weekend.

The Outdoors Show is a great way of meeting a massive number of companies involved in the outdoors face to face, seeing some of the outdoors personalities talking live in the flesh at the Berghaus World Theatre plus learning about adventurous sports like diving, climbing, paddling - below - and lots, lots more.

Speakers include Brian Blessed, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Michaela Strachan and Ben Fogle - who will be reunited with his rowing boat for the first time since his race across the Atlantic with Olympic champion James Cracknell.

Rather more enticingly, Biscuit, 'SARDA English search and rescue dog will be making an appearance, fresh from her stint at Crufts, and sporting the latest doggie accessories' it says here. Doggie accessories? Hmmmm...

You'll be able to catch the British Army's Army's expedition team before they leave for the Everest West Ridge Expedition 2006 - more about that soon - and Hugh Sawyer a.k.a. 'Ditch Monkey' is leaving his 'ditch' in the woods near the village of Lewknot, Oxfordshire, to spend the night outside the NEC Birmingham the night before the show. He will be sharing tales of his adventures with visitors on Friday 17 March.

OM Attractions

The list's too long to erm, list, but the guys from TGO will be at the show and you'll also be able to catch Bob Cartwright, aka 'PodBob' of backpackinglight.co.uk on their stand.

A propos of which, Bob has revved up for the show by interviewing the Show Manager, see here for the show preview podcast.

Finally, the entire OM team will be staggering around the show on Friday and in some cases, on Saturday as well. On the Friday, we'll be in the 'Cumberland Arms' pub at two o'clock - look out for the odd OM tea shirt - come along and say hello and we'll buy you a drink.

Then on Saturday a group of OMers are planning to meet up at 14.30 in the same place, see this forum thread for more details.

The OS Outdoor Show will soon be on us - March 17-19 at the NEC Birmingham. TGO will, as usual, have a stand at the show - OU264 to be exact, and we hope that as many of you of as possible will come and say hello and help break the monotony of having to spend a spring weekend inside the NEC!
We're not promising free beer but we are promising good subs offers and some freebies, including a CD full of specially recorded interviews put together by Bob Cartwright. Indeed, Bob will be with the TGO team on our stand and will be happy to chat to any of you about podcasts, ultralight backpacking and of course, ultralight gear.
Also on the stand will be John Manning, Chris Townsend, Colin Prior (Friday and Saturday) and myself and other well known backpackers and hillwalkers will be dropping in from time to time including Lorraine McCall, Steve Perry and Sqeaky Matt Hazley.
John, Chris, Colin, Lorraine and Matt will all be giving talks at the Mountain Theatre during the course of the show.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Why doesn't TGO give a CD of Bob's podcasts away on the cover of TGO when they are promoting the TGO Challenge this year?

Would be another good example of joined up journalism and promotion.

Thanks for that WD. We are discussing the possibility of giving a CD away on the front cover of a future TGO but I don't think it will be the Challenge issue. As it stands the numbers for the TGO Challenge are limited, we are always oversubscribed, and we don't need to promote the event in that way.
