An OUTDOORSmagic member on the OM Spain meet has been injured and another was battered and bruised in an attempt at scaling a peak in central Spain's Sierra de Gredos range. The Spanish Civil Guard Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group were called to the rescue near the village of Navalperal de Tormes in Avila province.

The accident occurred late on Sunday with the climber, from Aylesbury, sustaining a broken leg/ankle and wrist. He was also suffering from exhaustion, according to a hospital spokesman. The Civil Guard say it was lucky he was located and pulled off the mountain before the major cold front moving through Spain brought worsening weather with it.

The injured climber is being flown home today, whilst a second group of OM members prepares to fly out on Sunday on what has become an annual OM Spain Meet.

Hopefully everything will run smoothly on next week's trip, but it's worth remembering that the mountains are unpredictable places, and comprehensive insurance cover is a must. So, check that paperwork before you get the crampons out, and safe climbing.

2 OM members, identified as Steve D, and Cara Reynolds have been injured in an accident in the Sierra del Gredos mountains on the annual OM Spain Meet. Steve was evacuated by the Civil Guard with suspected broken legs late on Sunday. It's now been confirmed that Steve has suffered a broken leg/ankle and wrist and Cara is battered and bruised.

No doubt further details will emerge once the group return home on Sunday, although Steve is being flown home today (thursday).
